Changed Status to H1B? DSO Still Waiting?

When someone transitions from an F2 visa to an H1B without leaving the U.S., a subtle yet perplexing question often arises — should the F1 student’s university be notified?

It may seem like a minor detail, but it can leave many feeling uncertain. Picture this: one spouse is on an F1 visa while the other holds an F2; now, the F2 holder has switched to H1B status while remaining in the U.S. — no stamping, no re-entry, just a change approved by USCIS from within the country.

So, what’s the next step? Does the university that issued the I-20 to the F1 student need to be informed about the dependent’s status change?

Officially, there’s no requirement to update them. SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) keeps track of the primary student — in this case, the F1 holder — and only notifies schools of status changes that directly impact the student’s visa, not their dependent’s.

However, there’s a bit of a gray area. When the F2 dependent changes to another status like H1B, the SEVIS record still associates that person with the F1 student’s file unless the university takes the initiative to remove them. That’s where the uncertainty creeps in.

Some DSOs (Designated School Officials) might prefer to keep their records neat and accurate, especially if they’re conducting internal audits or preparing reports. But there’s no federal mandate requiring the student or the dependent to report a change of status.

It’s more about best practices than hard-and-fast rules. In many instances, universities don’t follow up, and students don’t report the change — and there are typically no repercussions. Still, some choose to inform the DSO to avoid any confusion down the line, especially if the student is applying for OPT, a STEM extension, or a visa renewal.

In the grand scheme of things, this serves as a reminder that even minor status changes can lead to significant questions — particularly within the closely-knit world of student visas. While transparency may not be mandatory, it certainly helps keep everything running smoothly.
