Cruel F-1 Glitch: Visa Approved, Then Refused Again

For international students chasing their American dream, the F-1 visa process is already nerve-wracking. Amidst all the political turmoil in the US, an “approved” status always comes as great joy to them, but it seems even that can’t be trusted.

A Reddit user recently shared how their visa, stuck in administrative processing for weeks, was finally marked “Approved.” They claimed they were given a 221 (g) three weeks ago and had made their social media accounts public just out of fear, even though their interview was before the new screening began.

However, that relief turned into heartbreak when, without warning, the status flipped back to “Refused.” There was no email or explanation. Just a silent reversal.

And this isn’t a one-off case as other students have also reported similar status jumps—from “Approved” to “Refused” or back into “Administrative Processing.”

What’s worse is that many of these reversals aren’t even due to new issues. It’s the system behaving erratically.

“Approved” often just means one stage is done, not that the visa is printed or cleared. But how are students supposed to know these minute details?

If a visa is refused, it’s still under processing. And now even if it’s approved it seems it’s back to processing again. Leaving students in the dark after raising their hopes is not just unprofessional, it’s cruel.
