Texas Alcohol Rules Alert F-1 Students
A group of Indian students on F-1 visas in Texas received a legal citation at a Texas State Park. They had booked a campsite and were drinking openly around a charcoal grill.
According to Texas laws, public display and consumption of alcohol is a strictly prohibited act. All outdoor areas in a park are considered public property.
The group of students had arrived at the park after dark, and claim that they had not seen the alcohol prohibition signs. As a result, a park officer stopped their gathering, and issued a Class C Parks and Wildlife Misdemeanor citation.
This is was issued against the student who booked the campsite. The other students were let off with only a warning.
A student visa is always at risk if the holder gets involved in any legal issues. In the last year, there have been several cases of student visas being cancelled for reasons as minor as a parking ticket.
A misdemeanor citation does not always lead to a visa cancellation. However, the exact chart and court outcome may heavily affect future immigration prospects.
In the current anti-immigration atmosphere of the US, any reason might be used to deport legal visa holders. As such, NRIs across the country are being warned to stay vigilant, and ensure they are not committing even the most minor of legal violations.
