DHS Targets Indians with Taj Ad, Offers $2.6K to Exit US

The US Department of Homeland Security has launched a campaign offering a free flight and up to $2,600 to immigrants living illegally. The move aims to encourage voluntary exit from the United States.

The campaign gained attention after a promotional post featured the Taj Mahal. The poster carried the message “Fly to India for Free” and directed users to the CBP Home app for registration.

Officials stated that the initiative is designed to reduce enforcement costs and ease pressure on immigration courts. It also provides an option to leave without formal deportation proceedings.

However, the use of the Taj Mahal image has drawn criticism online. Many users felt that using a cultural symbol for such messaging was insensitive.

The same campaign also featured similar posters for countries like Colombia and China. Still, critics argued that the approach appeared targeted and tone-deaf.

Some observers noted that migration issues are complex and cannot be simplified through such campaigns. They believe the messaging fails to reflect the realities faced by immigrants.

This is not the first time such a policy has been introduced. Last year, the Trump administration offered a similar option with a $1,000 payment for voluntary exit.

At that time, a “Stay Out and Leave Now” campaign was also promoted. The response from communities remained divided.

Reports from some participants raised concerns about delays in receiving the promised money. In some cases, payments were reportedly denied after individuals returned home.

For many in the Indian diaspora, the campaign feels controversial. The use of cultural imagery and financial incentives has added to the ongoing debate around immigration policies.
