One small mistake is enough to derail an immigrant’s life in America.
A social media user recently shared their panic after missing the timing on their EAD (Employment Authorization Document) renewal. They admitted to filing Form I-765 a bit too late—close to their current EAD’s expiration—and now they’re stuck.
They don’t have a job or any income. Even their driver’s license has expired, since many US states link it to valid immigration status.
The post doesn’t say what visa they were on, but all signs point to someone waiting for their green card approval, likely through a pending I-485 application.
For such people, the EAD is their lifeline, as it gives them the freedom to legally work in the US. And when that card expires without a renewal approved, they’re legally forced to stop working.
Moreover, USCIS delays have only made things worse. What used to be a 30-day process now drags on for months.
The user now fears they’ll be unable to pay rent, buy food, or even drive to a store, and there’s no easy fix in sight. A new application would take too long, and an expedite request—asking the authorities to speed up the process—is a gamble.
Such timing errors and bureaucratic delays continue to crush immigrants’ stability in America—a system that shows no remorse for human errors.
