EB-2 Green Card Approved, But OPT Expiry Sparks Panic

An EB-2 green card approval is now turning into a serious immigration concern. A couple’s NIW journey remains uncertain due to the wife’s upcoming OPT expiry and ongoing job struggles. The situation has created anxiety despite recent progress.

A Reddit user claimed that his wife’s EB-2 NIW petition was approved in March 2026. The priority date is August 2025, and they recently filed the I-485 application. They hoped this step would make the process smoother.

However, the situation became stressful as her initial OPT work authorisation is set to expire in mid July. She reportedly does not have a stable job yet. She has only been doing unpaid volunteer or internship work to gain experience.

Finding jobs on OPT has become very difficult in the current environment. Many employers prefer candidates who already hold a green card. This has made it harder for her to secure a full time role in her field.

Another concern came from the immigration attorney, Ellis Porter. The law firm reportedly advised against pursuing a PhD or a second master’s degree. This suggestion confused the couple despite the I-140 petition already being approved.

The case has now drawn attention online among international students. Many fear getting stuck between expiring visas, strict OPT rules, and the green card backlog. Seeking proper legal guidance remains important in such situations.
