F-1 Mess: Student Stuck as DSO Refuses to Fix I-20

A student trying to re-enter the US is now stuck in limbo because their DSO (Designated School Officer) won’t change the I-20 form to show “Initial Attendance.” Now, that one unchecked box could even lead to their deportation.

The student, who plans to enter on an F-1 visa, asked the university to issue a fresh I-20, the document that proves that they are accepted into a university. They wanted that key form marked as “initial” standard procedure when a student is flying in from abroad to start a program.

However, the DSO shut it down, claiming the system won’t allow that change now. According to the officer, once an I-20 is issued with a certain “issue reason,” like transfer or change of status, SEVIS (the system that holds all students’ records) won’t let DSOs edit it later.

So if the student wants a proper “initial” I-20, they’d have to either file for a new SEVIS record through USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) or leave and come back with a brand-new acceptance form. Both are expensive and time-consuming.

Several users pointed out that simply showing up at the airport with the wrong I-20 and “explaining it” to US officers is risky. Border agents don’t play nice with paperwork errors. One wrong answer and you’re on the next flight home, potentially blacklisting you from future entry as well.

This kind of confusion isn’t new. But it shows how fragile the F-1 process can be. One small detail, something a student can’t even control, can destroy months of planning.
