In what feels like a growing trend, another F-1 student shared online that they missed the crucial OPT filing window. And not by a day or two, but well past the 60-day post-graduation grace period.
Even though they might regret their carelessness, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) rules don’t leave much room for error here. If you don’t apply for post-completion OPT within 60 days of your program end date, that opportunity is gone.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a work permit given to recent graduates that serves as a lifeline for students who can legally work in the US for up to 2 years after their degree.
It is part of a strict immigration law where late applications, even by 1 or 2 days, aren’t accepted, let alone after 2 months. There’s no workaround, no appeal, no second chance, unless you enroll in another degree program.
And that’s where it gets even more frustrating. You can’t just go back to the same level of education and reapply.
If your OPT was after a master’s, you’ll now need to pursue a PhD. If it was after a bachelor’s, then it’s time for grad school. That’s not just a new I-20, it’s another few lakhs in fees, years of study, and more student debt.
Some Reddit users advised consulting with the DSO (Designated School Officer) to double-check SEVIS dates or explore possible school-specific tricks, but even they sounded doubtful.
The authorities or your school official won’t notify you; it is a student’s own responsibility to apply for OPT for their future. That is why it is more concerning that they are missing out on these crucial dates.
