F-1 Visa Crisis: Techie Rejected Over US Family?

A techie with 10 years of experience at Microsoft India, a wife studying in the US, and savings of over $150,000 got rejected at the US consulate in Hyderabad at his F-1 interview.

On May 9, this candidate’s student visa was rejected under Section 214(b) while applying to pursue a Master’s in Information Technology Management (MSITM) at UT Austin. According to the techie, the visa officer allegedly didn’t believe he had strong enough ties to return to India.

Despite presenting a clear career goal—upskilling for an Engineering Manager role by learning AI and its business applications—and showing solid financial backing through scholarships, an education loan, and savings, the rejection came swiftly.

His wife is already in the US on an F1 visa at Babson College. His sister is also there on a dependent visa. This may have raised red flags about his “intent to return,” a common reason cited under Section 214(b).

This is exactly why many Indian professionals feel stuck. Even top talent working at global firms like Microsoft can be denied a student visa without a clear explanation.

Now, he’s left asking: Can he defer his admission to Fall 2025? What additional documents could help? And when should he reapply?

The harsh reality is that for many Indian students and working professionals, even an impressive resume isn’t enough. The US system still runs on assumptions, not just merit.
