7-Month Wait for F1 OPT: Paying More Only Choice?

F-1 students applying for OPT continue to face long processing delays. For many, every week lost has a direct impact on their career plans and visa status.

7-Month Wait Without Update

One student has been waiting seven months for their OPT approval, with no update from the USCIS. Their portal still shows “Case Was Received.” The delay has already cost them valuable work time during the OPT period.

OPT Timeline Pressure

The OPT program allows F-1 students only 14 months of eligibility after graduation. Since this student graduated in May 2025, every month of delay reduces their available work time. USCIS has also not responded to their inquiry, adding to the stress.

Premium Processing: Costly but Necessary

Experts suggest that Premium Processing, though expensive, is now almost essential. Waiting beyond four months can risk both OPT approval and F-1 status, especially after the 60-day grace period ends.

Irreversible Time Loss

The student has recently upgraded to Premium Processing, but the lost time cannot be recovered. Such administrative delays continue to put international students at risk of losing work authorization.

Need for Standardised Processing

Without consistent processing timelines, OPT delays are likely to persist. Many students could face uncertainty and potential visa complications due to these bureaucratic slowdowns.
