A newly added line on an official receipt notice has created anxiety among F-1 visa holders in the US. An international student shared on Reddit that the STEM OPT receipt clearly states it is not evidence of employment authorization. This has sparked confusion among students awaiting extension approval.
Earlier, students who filed their STEM OPT extension on time could continue working for up to 180 days. This automatic extension allowed uninterrupted employment while the application was pending. Many relied on this rule to maintain job continuity. The recent change has altered that understanding.
Late last year, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services revised its policy. The update removed automatic work extensions for several Employment Authorization Documents, including OPT. As a result, receipt notices can no longer serve as proof of work authorisation.
The newly added line on the OPT receipt now clearly warns applicants. It states that the document cannot be used as employment proof. Universities are informing students about the policy shift. Employers are also exercising caution while hiring F-1 visa holders.
For international students, especially Indians who form a large section of the F-1 community, even a brief work gap can create serious challenges. Losing valid work status may impact full time roles. Many recent graduates are already facing uncertainty in a competitive job market.
