F-1 Deportation Scare: SEVIS Overstay Unfixable?

International students in the United States face immense risks when mistakes occur in their visa status. One case shared online shows how a simple error, combined with poor guidance, can leave a student facing deportation and long-term entry bans.

SEVIS Termination Creates Overstay

The student revealed that they stayed in the U.S. after being placed on academic suspension. Their SEVIS record was terminated, and a Reduced Course Load (RCL) was denied. This placed them in unlawful overstay, making them vulnerable to a three to ten-year re-entry ban.

Reinstatement Nearly Impossible

Comments from other students and experts stressed that leaving immediately was the only option once SEVIS was terminated. Now, reinstatement is considered nearly impossible, leaving the student with few or no legal remedies to fix their situation.

Poor Guidance Fuels Mistakes

This case highlights how lack of proper advice from Designated School Officials (DSOs) can cause irreversible harm. Students under pressure may follow wrong instructions, unaware that one mistake can end their academic career and immigration journey.

Need for Transparency and Support

International students often feel abandoned during such crises. Greater accountability from institutions and authorities is essential. Without clearer guidance, many will continue to make decisions that carry severe immigration consequences and long-lasting personal damage.
