An F-1 student is facing a serious problem. A technical error caused them to miss their mandatory 6-month STEM OPT validation report. Their SEVP portal was linked to their school e-mail, which had been revoked after graduation, leaving them unaware of the deadline.
Missed Report Due to Technical Error
Without access to the school e-mail, the student never received any reminder to submit their validation report. They only learned of the issue after their Designated School Officer (DSO) contacted them. By then, the July 2025 deadline had already passed.
Violation Confirmed by DSO
The DSO confirmed that missing the report deadline was a clear violation of OPT requirements. Although the student had complied with all other conditions, this lapse placed their STEM OPT status at serious risk.
Anxiety Over Future Plans
The student is now anxious about a planned trip outside the U.S. They fear that re-entry could become impossible due to this technical violation. Even with reassurance from peers that single-employer status offers some protection, the uncertainty remains heavy.
System Flaws Exposed
This situation reveals a deeper flaw in the OPT reporting system. Many students rely on their institutional e-mail IDs for communication. Once access is revoked, they stop receiving compliance notifications, putting their legal status at risk without realising it.
Need for Independent Communication Channels
The DSO’s inability to resolve the issue highlights a larger communication gap. Students need independent and permanent contact channels to avoid such problems. Without them, even minor technical errors can lead to severe and lasting consequences.
