F-1 Status Limbo: Student Stuck in Processing Hell

A student remains stuck in a prolonged visa limbo despite completing what seemed like a successful F-1 interview. The case reflects a growing problem faced by international applicants dealing with administrative delays and confusing updates in the US visa system.

Administrative Processing Confusion

After the interview, the student’s application was placed under administrative processing under section 221-g for a social-media background check. The online system displayed “Refused,” a term often misunderstood as a rejection, though it differs from a final visa denial marked as “Rejected.”

Unexpected Second Interview

Soon after, the student saw an “Approved” update but was later called for a two-hour follow-up interview. During this session, the visa officer requested a new DS-5535 form, reverting the status to “Refused” again while keeping the student’s passport for review.

The DS-5535 Deep Dive

Form DS-5535 requires extensive details about the applicant’s past travel, social-media handles, and contacts over several years. Many applicants feel the process is intrusive and unnecessary, especially after already passing initial security and academic screenings.

Growing Anxiety Among Students

The student says the questioning during the second interview focused more on personal history than the chosen course in dental hygiene. With college starting in December, they are now trapped in uncertainty, waiting indefinitely for an update from the consulate.

Broader Impact on F-1 Applicants

Since the Trump administration expanded social-media screening, thousands of students have faced similar delays. Many remain stuck in the “Refused” stage for months while trying to begin their studies at universities across the United States.
