An F-1 student’s recent return to the United States after seven months has brought relief to many Indian students. There were fears of trouble at entry due to changing immigration rules, but the actual airport experience turned out to be smooth and reassuring.
The student had been working remotely on STEM OPT and stayed outside the US for nearly seven months. Current guidance often suggests returning within six months. The student also secured admission into a PhD programme and carried a transfer-pending I-20.
To avoid complications, the student chose to travel via Calgary, Canada, and completed US preclearance there. However, tension began at the airline counter when staff initially claimed the student was banned from entering due to new rules.
The student clarified that the F-1 visa was issued before the new proclamation and requested the airline to recheck the policy. After about 20 minutes of internal verification and discussions, the boarding pass was finally issued.
The US preclearance process turned out to be simple and quick. The officer asked basic questions about STEM OPT, the PhD admission, and the transfer-pending I-20 before allowing entry without detailed scrutiny or delay.
This experience comes at a time when many students are anxious about re-entry into the United States. While the case offers hope and reassurance, it also highlights the importance of staying cautious and following updated immigration guidelines.
