H-1B Workers Face Tougher US Job Market
A software engineer on H-1B took to Reddit after being laid off. They had attended nine interviews, all of which were cut short after they mentioned needing an H-1B transfer.
This prompted them to take to Reddit to ask about the current hiring situaiton in the US. They had assumed that having a valid H-1B visa would make it much easier to find a new job.
This is because the company doesn’t have to go through the whole immigration process needed for a new H-1B or OPT petition. As they found out, however, that is not the case.
An interviewer for a Fortune 500 company commented on the Reddit post, revealing a sad reality. They said that their team was asked not to interview work visa candidates for new full-time roles.
While the company did not share the reason for this, the commentor surmises that it is likely due to the political instability and immigration uncertainties. Other users from different companies noted similar hiring freezes.
A VP of a large tech company said that all H-1B hiring was suspended, and only engineering PhD holders were being taken.
The larger picture in the US job market seems to be clear. H-1B workers are no longer being preferred for general roles.
While niche expert positions are still receiving offers, the larger H-1B community seems to facing a historic drought in employment.
