Online gaming feud turned violent when a 20 year old flew from New Jersey to Florida to beat his opponent with a hammer.
Since the genesis of video games, the impact of it on society has been a topic of debate. Games like GTA, Mortal Combat, and online shooters depict extreme brutality and enable gamers to perform acts of violence virtually. Parents and teachers have shared their concerns over this and they fear that this gaming culture might normalize violence for kids.
Though there is no scientific data that proves corelation between games and the tendency to attemp any violent act, there have been cases where gaming outrage crossed the line of virtual actions.
The recent case of Edward Kang is one of such cases and according to the police, “a weird one”. 20 year old Edward had an online rivalry with a player in a game called, “ArcheAge”, a mediaeval fantasy multiplayer online role-playing game. The rivalry escalated and Edward decided to take this online feud out of computer screens. He told his mom that he is going to visit a friend and flew from New Jersey to Florida.
He bought a hammer from a local hardware store and went for the victim’s house. He attacked the victim in his house at 2 am with the hammer. After taking multiple hits the victim managed to call for help and his step dad intervened and called the police call.
The victim even though suffered severe head injuries but non of them turned out fatal.
The police reported that this was an unusual case and Kang will be facing charges of attempted second-degree murder and armed burglary with a mask. It is clear that it will be long before Edward is able to touch any video games again.
