Green Card Denied Over Tax: USCIS Too Strict?

A small tax return error has crushed another Green Card dream in the US. One applicant, sharing their experience on social media, learned the complexities of the immigration system the hard way.

The user claimed their green card (I-485) and work permit (I-765) applications were denied because the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) claimed they didn’t submit the sponsor’s latest federal tax return. However, the applicant says they did submit it when they first filed last year.

And just like that, they’re now marked ineligible for adjustment of status. With no green card and no work permit, they now stand at risk of being asked to leave the country.

This isn’t a rare glitch, as many applicants, especially those filing based on family sponsorship, are being denied for “missing” financial documents. Even if you think you’ve submitted everything, USCIS wants every page, every detail, in their preferred format, and for the most recent tax year.

The worst part is that most people don’t even realize they’ve made a mistake until it’s too late. By then, the only options left are to refile or to spend thousands on legal help to try and reopen the case.
