H1-Bs Survival: Why Should H4s Make Sacrifices?

A recent post on social media has ignited a debate after a user suggested that the H4-EAD program should be eliminated to ensure the survival of the H1B and F1-OPT visa programs.

The user highlighted that many H4-EAD holders, particularly those with technical skills, are intensifying the competition in the already saturated H1B job market.

The user argued that hiring managers often favor H4 EAD holders because they do not require visa processing or green card applications, making it simpler for companies to bring them on board.

Additionally, H4-EAD holders are perceived as more cost-effective since many choose to forgo medical benefits, relying instead on his spouse’s health insurance.

Foreign students, especially those on F1 visas, are at a disadvantage as numerous H4-EAD holders are occupying entry-level tech positions that were previously accessible to them. These H4-EAD spouses, who typically are not the main earners in their households, are often open to accepting lower-paying jobs with greater flexibility, which complicates the hiring process for foreign students.

From our perspective, ending the H4-EAD program would negatively impact families who depend on this work permit to help support households, providing for our families and contributing to the economy in meaningful ways that should be recognized rather than viewed as competition.

Instead of eliminating the program, we think it’s crucial to explore options for creating a more equitable and balanced job market. Taking away the H4-EAD would only add to the financial burden on families and make it even more challenging for individuals to establish a stable life in the U.S., further exacerbating the rising costs of living and housing in the U.S.
