The United States has proposed major changes to the H-1B visa system. This move could impact thousands of Indian professionals working or planning to work in the country. The proposed changes are expected to reshape hiring and salary structures.
The US Department of Labor has suggested a significant increase in minimum wage requirements. This applies not only to H-1B visas but also to green card categories like EB-2 and EB-3. The proposal is currently open for public feedback.
According to the proposal, wages could rise by 21 percent to 33 percent across categories. On average, this means an increase of around $14,000 per job. Entry level salaries may shift from the 17th percentile to the 34th percentile.
The government has stated that the aim is to protect American workers. Officials believe higher wage requirements will prevent companies from hiring cheaper foreign labour. The goal is to create equal opportunities for local and international talent.
However, critics have raised concerns about the comparison standards. They argue that many H-1B workers are early in their careers. Comparing them with senior level employees may create an unrealistic wage structure.
This situation also places H-1B workers in a difficult position. If they earn more, they face criticism for taking opportunities. If they earn less, they are labelled as cheap labour replacing local workers.
Some experts believe additional fees could have addressed the issue more effectively. Despite the proposed hike, underlying concerns around visa policies remain. Companies have already started exploring alternatives due to strict regulations.
The proposal is still under review and may change based on public response. However, it has already created uncertainty among professionals. Rising costs could reduce job opportunities and affect future migration trends.
