An Indian techie based in the United States has shared a painful immigration experience. The issue stopped him from returning to India during his mother’s final days. His story highlights the emotional cost of strict visa processes.
The H-1B visa holder, Gautam Dey, posted his experience on LinkedIn. He said he moved to the United States in 2007 for a multinational company. Over the years, he built a stable life abroad.
Dey shared that he paid taxes, bought a home, and raised his children in America. However, his life took a painful turn when his mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The situation demanded urgent travel to India.
He tried for 17 days to secure a visa stamping appointment. The system reportedly blocked his attempts repeatedly. Without stamping, leaving the US could have risked his job, visa status, and family’s future.
During this time, his daughter was studying in college, and his younger child was still in school. The pressure of balancing family responsibilities and legal restrictions made the situation even harder. He remained stuck despite the emergency.
Tragically, his mother passed away before he could reach her. He could only speak to her through phone and video calls. The incident left him deeply distressed and helpless.
Immigration expert Sam Peak criticised recent visa policies linked to Donald Trump. He said irregular checks and delays have made emergency travel difficult for H-1B holders. Many similar cases continue without quick resolution.
