H1Bs Betrayed: No Green Card, No Job

An H1B worker’s life turned upside down overnight. Their PERM process failed, and to make things worse, they were fired from their job.

A social media user shared their ordeal, revealing that the same company that once promised to sponsor their green card is now unwilling to let them stay until the end of their H1B visa. Instead, they’ve been given an ultimatum to leave by June 2025, even though their work permit is valid until October 2026.

The company’s green card sponsorship failed because a US worker was found for the role. But what’s unclear is why that suddenly means firing an employee who was already working there.

Legally, companies can fire H1B employees at any time. But morally, it raises serious questions, especially in today’s political climate.

A skilled foreign worker, good enough to be hired in the first place, is now being let go like a temporary worker just because the green card process didn’t go through.

That’s the bitter reality. With growing uncertainty around immigration, companies will prefer American workers wherever possible, no matter the skill difference.

Indian techies will face the brunt of this in the coming years as Trump’s second term brings more such revamps against immigrants. The US system is shifting, and foreign workers are the first ones on the chopping block.
