‘Lease on My Own Life’: Indian H-1B’s Decade of Fear

The H-1B journey has become a yearly survival challenge for many Indian professionals in the United States. Beyond recent visa scrutiny, a social media post has highlighted the emotional strain of living on a work visa.

The user described nearly a decade of uncertainty between 2005 and 2014. He wrote that every year felt like renewing a lease on his own life. Instead of planning the future, he focused on staying in the country.

He recalled the most difficult phase in 2009 when he lost his job while his wife was pregnant. With only 60 days of unemployment allowed on an H-1B visa, the pressure to find work quickly was intense.

Visa stamping trips to India created additional stress. He described sleepless nights after submitting his passport, constantly checking email updates and counting the number of legal days remaining.

While friends discussed cryptocurrency profits and property investments, he avoided taking financial risks. He feared that one mistake could force him to leave the United States permanently.

The user said this cautious approach eventually helped him. He and his wife focused on saving money and consistently contributed to retirement accounts over several years.

However, fear of missing out later pushed him to buy property in India. Some investments did not perform well due to the pandemic and market slowdown, adding to financial disappointment.

He said constant comparison with others became a major source of stress. Watching friends succeed in investments made him feel left behind despite maintaining stability.

The story reflects the emotional reality faced by many H-1B workers. With visa delays and uncertainty continuing, such experiences remind people that life on a work visa often involves anxiety alongside opportunity.
