H-4 EAD Useless? SSN Stuck, Employer Denies Job

A routine step in the H-4 EAD process has turned into a confusing delay. The issue appears to be stuck between two government systems. This situation has left applicants uncertain about their employment status despite having valid work authorisation.

An H-1B spouse applied for a Social Security Number on March 31 after receiving the Employment Authorization Document. The SSN, issued by the Social Security Administration, is essential for legal employment. Without it, earning a salary is not possible.

At the SSA office, officials initiated verification through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements system. This process checks immigration status before issuing the SSN. It is a standard step, but delays in this stage can cause serious problems.

The applicant saw the SAVE status change to Returned to Agency. This update usually indicates that verification is complete. It typically means immigration authorities have processed the request and returned it to the SSA.

However, communication from SSA has been inconsistent. One officer stated that verification was complete and only internal processing remained. Another officer claimed the case was still under verification and advised waiting.

There has been no rejection so far, but there is no clear timeline either. The employer is waiting for the SSN to proceed. This delay has placed the job opportunity in uncertainty for the applicant.

The situation highlights a gap between system updates and real time processing. One system shows progress while another indicates delay. This leaves applicants confused about their actual status and next steps.

For a country with decades of immigration experience, such inefficiencies raise concerns. The lack of clarity and coordination continues to affect individuals. The issue remains unresolved, with no official acknowledgement of the delay.
