More and more Indian men, especially from Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat, are illegally migrating to countries like the United States, Canada, and Britain for better job opportunities.
They often take the “donkey” route, a risky journey to avoid border controls, due to high unemployment and a lack of well-paid jobs back home.
Migration experts say many see this as a way to escape poverty and fulfill their dreams.
The “donkey” route, named after the Punjabi word “dunki” meaning to move around, has been known in Punjab for years and even featured in SRK’s Dunki movie. However, most of these journeys end tragically.
Jaspal Singh, a 57-year-old Indian, died in U.S. immigration custody from a heart attack.
He first entered the U.S. illegally in 1992 but voluntarily returned to India in 1998 after deportation proceedings.
However, in 2023, he was apprehended again while attempting to reenter the country illegally through the US-Mexico border.
Singh was detained at the Folkston ICE Processing Center in Folkston, Georgia, awaiting deportation. Tragically, he died at the Southeast Georgia Health System’s Camden Campus in St. Marys on April 15.
The exact cause of his death is still under investigation pending an autopsy.
Following Singh’s death, ICE notified his family and the Indian Consulate in New York.
