NRI’s Hindu Ritual a Safety Hazard for US Society?

The internet has been buzzing after a video surfaced showing an Indian family in the US performing a havan, a traditional Hindu ritual. The video, shot in Texas, went viral when neighbours saw smoke from the garage and called the fire department, fearing a possible fire.

Firefighters Interrupt Sacred Ritual

In the viral clip, firefighters are seen speaking to the family in the middle of the ritual. While no rules were broken and there was no official restriction on performing such practices indoors, the situation quickly drew attention online.

Internet Backlash and Misunderstanding

The online reaction was harsh. Many users criticised the family for performing a fire-based ritual100 VIP Break Darshan Tickets for NRIs Per Day without informing the fire department. Even some members of the Indian community questioned why the ritual was held inside a garage.

Cultural Hypocrisy Called Out

Several people pointed out the hypocrisy in the reaction. Activities like barbecuing in garages are normal in the US, yet a peaceful religious ritual triggered panic. The video clearly shows that the flame was under control, but that didn’t stop people from labelling the ritual as dangerous.

Rising Intolerance Towards Cultural Practices

India has long been known for embracing diverse cultures and religions. In comparison, the reaction in this case has raised concerns about the growing intolerance towards immigrant traditions, especially with the increasing number of NRIs living in the US.

Fire Brigade Was Doing Its Job

It’s important to note that the neighbours and the fire brigade did the right thing by reacting to visible smoke. Their concern was genuine, and their response was based on safety.

Online Hate and Racism Must Stop

However, the real issue lies in the racist and culturally insensitive comments made online. Remarks telling the family to “go back home” or “act American” reflect a worrying attitude. If sacred rituals now require permits, perhaps the greater threat is the rising hostility towards cultural diversity
