Hindus Rally Against California Bill

In California, hundreds of Hindus have gathered to protest against SB 403, an anti-caste discrimination bill that aims to outlaw caste-based discrimination in the state. The bill passed in the California Senate with an overwhelming 31-5 vote and now awaits Governor Gavin Newsom’s approval.

Protesters in Sacramento called on Newsom to veto the bill, as they believe it may fuel Hinduphobia and that existing laws can address caste discrimination.

The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) is urging Newsom to veto the bill and has mentioned his previous support for the Hindu community regarding textbook representation in 2017. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) is planning to file a lawsuit against the bill, arguing that it violates civil rights and targets and profiles Hindus.

SB 403 adds caste as a protected category under the Unruh Civil Rights Act, ensuring equal accommodations and privileges. Supporters of the bill staged a hunger strike, urging Newsom to sign it into law.

Newsom’s office stated that he would evaluate the bill upon receiving it, and the bill had previously passed the State Assembly with strong support.
