A disturbing case of animal abuse has put the Indian-American pediatrician under the spotlight.
Anita Damodaran, 38, was taken into custody in Florida after her dog, Betty, was found starving and barely alive. The pet was inside a plastic storage bin in a bathtub only discovered by a cleaning crew while clearing out Damodaran’s apartment.
Betty was found weak, covered in sores, and unable to move. Rescuers revealed she looked lifeless as if she had lost all hope.
Police later sent the Indian-origin doctor to Illinois on the charges of Animal cruelty and also shared the shocking photos of her dog. Reports suggest she may have survived by eating her own waste for days.
On her first appearance in Chicago court, she was allowed to roam free but with strict conditions of remaining in Illinois and following a 12-hour nightly curfew. She is due back in court on February 14.
Animal rights activists are demanding justice with over 12 of them appearing in the court to hold Damodaran accountable. Meanwhile, Betty has now recovered and is living in a loving home.
