Recently, a six-year-old girl was added to the list after facing an unlucky fate. She was struck by a boat operated by her mother. While water activities are enjoyable for US citizens, the increasing casualties are drawing attention, and unfortunately, fate has been particularly cruel towards kids.
A recent report reveals that in 2022, there were around 4040 reports of water accidents, leading to 636 deaths and 2,222 injuries. Alarmingly, around 10% of these fatalities and injuries belong to the age bracket of 0-19, which is a concerning statistic for the future US citizens.
The main reason behind these stats is inexperience when it comes to operating boats. Even the authorities point out that most of these casualties could be avoided with the simplest measures.
The report also states that 74% of all boating deaths occurred on a boat where the operator had no formal boating safety training. Amidst the high death toll, only 14% of the accidents had an operator who received a nationally-approved boating safety education certificate, according to the Coast Guard.
The lack of concern regarding wearing a life jacket is also claiming more lives, as 85% were seen not wearing one. Accidents involving propellers are also becoming a major cause of these incidents.
Multiple problems aggregate to create such concerning statistics, and taking some basic precautions could prevent many of these tragedies.
