How Will Trump 2.0 Affect Indian Students?

Over 269,000 Indian students study in America and every year millions apply for visas and work permits. As Trump emerged victorious in the 2024 elections, the community might face a bumpy road ahead of them.

With the Republican leader pushing his “America First” agenda and stricter immigration policies, Indians can expect a crackdown on F-1 visas for students. Moreover, H-1B visas issued to working professionals will also face new limits on eligibility and caps.

Trump made it clear that he will prioritize American jobs over immigrants, which will lead to a more competitive job market for Indians after graduation. To get opportunities, students should opt for upskilling in the STEM fields like AI, data science, and medicine where the US is still reliant on skilled workers from India.

If aspiring students don’t get their dream college or jobs in the US it will also put a strain on the Indian education system and employment rate. It may prompt the government to work towards building a better ecosystem for students in the country instead of millions opting for options abroad.

It is an uncertain time for the Indian youth. Those who are preparing to get higher education in the US will have a tough time landing a college, and those already studying there will not have many options following graduation.
