A large number of Indians leave the country for a better job perspective every year. They are often criticized for not doing enough for their home country. In a first of its kind initiative by many Indian-Americans, they have decided to pool in money for the development of one Indian city. This project has pooled in around $100 million for the development of Amritsar.
Amritsar is the holy city of Sikhism and tourists visit this city from all around the world. It also has a large number of its people living and earning in the USA. Under the initiative of former Indian envoy to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the group has pledged this amount for developmental projects in the city.
The Viksit Amritsar Initiative will provide funding to entrepreneurs working in the field of agriculture, healthcare, information technology, tourism and skill development. More than 250 applications have already been received from the interested entrepreneurs.
This is the first time that the Indian diaspora is working together for the development of a particular City in India. The project is in collaboration with the Federation Of Indian Chamber Of Commerce And Industries and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.
