30 Yrs in US, Indian Arrested at Green Card Visit

An Indian origin woman faced a shocking ordeal during what you expect to be a routine green card process. You go for biometrics hoping to complete a formality, but instead, US immigration authorities detained her without explanation, leaving her family in distress.

Babblejit “Bubbly” Kaur, a 60 year old woman, was detained on December 1 during her green card interview in California. You learn that she has lived in the US for over 30 years. Her family says she has no criminal record and ICE gave no reason for the arrest.

Long life built in California

Babblejit migrated from India in 1994 and settled in Long Beach. You see how she built a stable life over decades. She and her husband ran the Belmont Shore restaurant for more than 20 years until it shut during COVID.

Approved petition still ends in arrest

Her daughter Joti Kaur told local media that the green card petition was already approved through sponsorship by her US citizen daughter and son in law. You expect the biometrics visit to be the final step, but ICE agents stopped the USCIS interview and arrested her.

Limited legal access after detention

You are told she was allowed only one brief call to her lawyer. ICE then shackled her and took her away in a van with other detainees. For several hours, her family had no information about her location.

Tracked through ICE locator

The family later found her name in the ICE detainee locator in Los Angeles. You then learn she was moved overnight to the Adelanto ICE Center, where she remains till December 15.

Community outrage grows

Neighbours describe Babblejit as peaceful and generous. You see growing anger in the community, especially because similar detentions have happened before. This incident has heightened fear among green card applicants.

Rising fear around USCIS visits

ICE has increasingly detained immigrants at USCIS offices, often citing old or unresolved cases. You now see many green card applicants afraid to attend interviews, even when their records are clean.
