Dr. Rajesh Motibhai Patel, an Indian-origin physician at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for sexually assaulting a female patient.
The verdict was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Richard Moultrie Jr. of the Northern District of Georgia.
In November 2024, a jury found Rajesh Patel guilty of violating the patient’s constitutional right to bodily integrity under color of law and abusive sexual contact.
The assault occurred in January 2020 during a medical examination when Rajesh Patel inappropriately touched the patient without her consent and for no legitimate medical reason.
“Rajesh Patel used his position of trust as a VA physician to sexually assault his female veteran patient who had honorably served our country,” said Moultrie Jr. “His crimes were an egregious breach of that trust and an abuse of his power.”
Alongside his prison sentence, Rajesh Motibhai Patel has been sentenced to 15 years of supervised release and is banned from practicing medicine during this period.
