Viral Video: US Walmart Shocking Desi Grocery Rates

An Indian expat in the US has gone viral after sharing a video of desi food items sold at shocking prices in a Walmart store in Dallas. The video, posted by Rajat on Instagram, shows how Indian staples are widely available in American supermarkets.

Rajat highlighted popular brands like Royal lentils, Haldiram’s namkeen, and Parle biscuits stocked alongside spices, sauces, and masalas. He noted that Walmart caters to the large Indian community in the city by keeping these familiar products on shelves.

What surprised most viewers were the prices. Everyday items that cost very little in India were marked much higher in the US. Royal masoor and moong dal were priced around $4, while Haldiram’s aloo bhujia and khatta meetha namkeen also cost $4 each.

Parle Hide & Seek biscuits were listed at $4.5, over ₹300 in Indian currency, compared to just ₹20 for the same pack in India. Social media users expressed shock, with one remarking that $4 biscuits equal ₹320 back home.

Others pointed out that dal at $4 means nearly ₹400 for half a kilo. Some even compared the prices to Canada, where Indian goods are often cheaper. Still, many agreed that despite the higher cost, Walmart’s shelves reflect both nostalgia and demand among the Indian diaspora.
