F1 Student Scams Food Bank? Massive Online Backlash

A video made by an F1 student in the University of North Texas has recently gone viral. In the video, the student allegedly shows how to scam food banks into getting free food.

Food banks exist to provide for those who cannot afford food on their own. Scamming them essentially means scamming the poorest of the country out of basic necessities.

Following the massive backlash, the creator of the video has made it private on YouTube. The clip shared on the social media site X has also been blocked via copyright.

The incident has triggered a fresh wave of hatred towards Indians in the US. Many comments on the X post called for the deportation of all Indians from the country.

However, the real details of the incident remain unclear. The University of Texas has its own Food Pantry that provides for enrolled students free of cost.

Using that facility is not at all a crime of any kind. Applying for an F-1 visa also requires proof of being able to financially support oneself in the US.

If the student used the University Food Pantry to get food, that is simply using campus resources. It is in no way a scam or immigration offense that can lead to deportation.

However, the incident shows just how poorly Indians in the US are viewed currently. Even using university resources can be twisted into a negative story and be used as a reason to spread even more hatred online.
