Indian Fakes Robbery For US Visa

Vinaykumar Patel, an Indian national and manager of the Fuel-On convenience store in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, has been convicted of multiple counts related to visa fraud and conspiracy.

In June 2019, Patel orchestrated a staged robbery at his store, reaching out to an associate in New Jersey to hire someone for the act.

Following the staged robbery, investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police, Patel used the police reports to apply for a U-visa—a special visa for crime victims cooperating with law enforcement. At the time of the staged robbery, Patel had no lawful immigration status in the U.S.

Now facing a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison, Patel’s conviction comes after a three-day jury trial. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced the outcome, highlighting that Patel’s case was investigated by the FBI, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Clinton County District Attorney’s Office.

Patel’s sentencing will consider federal statutes and guidelines, marking the conclusion of a convoluted tale involving fraud, conspiracy, and misuse of law enforcement resources.
