Shocking: Indian Filmed 13K US Patients in Toilets

In a deeply shocking case that has sparked outrage, Indian-origin Sanjai Syamaprasad, a 48-year-old hospital worker from Brooklyn, has admitted to secretly recording thousands of individuals inside hospital bathrooms, yet he will not spend a single day in jail.

According to Times of India, Syamaprasad, who was employed as a sleep technician at a Long Island medical facility, used hidden cameras disguised as smoke detectors to capture footage of unsuspecting patients and staff.

Prosecutors say the covert devices were installed in nine separate restrooms at the Northwell Sleep Disorders Center in Manhasset, where Syamaprasad worked the overnight shift. Investigators believe up to 13 thousand people may have been filmed over several months.

The secret recordings included both adults and at least one child. Syamaprasad reportedly used Velcro patches to mount the cameras in positions that captured toilets and shower areas.

While over 300 video clips were recovered, only five victims could be conclusively identified, which limited the number of formal charges that could be filed against him.

The disturbing discovery came to light in 2023 when colleagues caught him watching bathroom footage on his phone during a shift. He was immediately terminated and arrested.

Initially pleading not guilty to charges including unlawful surveillance and evidence tampering, Syamaprasad later changed his plea and accepted a deal that gave him five years of probation but no prison time.

This outcome has drawn heavy criticism. Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly called the ruling a miscarriage of justice, arguing that the scale and severity of the privacy invasion warranted jail time. “Over 300 videos. Thousands of victims. And no jail? That sends the wrong message,” she said.

Officials suspect the hidden recordings may have started as early as August 2022, well before the investigation officially began.

The case has reignited debate around surveillance laws in public and medical spaces and whether current punishments truly reflect the seriousness of such crimes.
