Kaur, 21, was abducted from her workplace and driven over 650 km with her hands bound by cable ties in the trunk of a borrowed car. Reports indicate that Singh made superficial cuts to her throat before burying her alive in a shallow grave in the remote Flinders Ranges of South Australia.
During the sentencing submissions, the prosecutor described how Kaur suffered the conscious agony of breathing in and swallowing soil as she died. The prosecution argued that the killing was a cruel act of vengeance.
Earlier, Jasmeen Kaur had filed a police complaint stating that Singh had been stalking her. Tarikjot Singh’s obsession with Kaur was evident, as he had sent her threatening messages prior to her death.
Tarikjot Singh initially denied the allegations and claimed that Kaur died by suicide, but he later admitted to the murder. During the investigation, security camera footage showed Singh purchasing gloves, cable ties, and a shovel from a hardware store on the day of the kidnapping.
Singh now faces a mandatory life sentence, although his defense argued for a more lenient sentence, citing it as a crime of passion.
