Indian students, who sent record numbers to the US last year, now face a major setback as American universities report a sharp fall in applications. New Common App data shows a sudden 14 percent drop for the 2025-26 cycle, the biggest decline since 2020.
India Records Steepest Fall Among Major Countries
This 14 percent fall is also the steepest drop among large applicant countries. Overall applications dropped by 9 percent while China saw only a 1 percent decline. India had crossed 331,000 students in US universities in 2023-24, but this trend now appears to be reversing.
Visa Crackdown Sparks Uncertainty
The primary reason is the Trump administration’s aggressive visa measures. Soon after Trump returned to office in January, students began reporting sudden SEVIS terminations without notice. Many were flagged for old resolved issues, minor violations, or even past court visits as victims.
SEVIS Chaos Triggers Panic
Nearly 5,000 students briefly lost legal status before the court stepped in. The damage was already done. Many chose to leave the US during that period while future students saw it as a warning. The fear of unstable status pushed more aspirants to rethink their plans.
Rising Rejections And Delays At Consulates
Visa rejections and delays added further pressure. By March, F-1 rejection rates had jumped to 41 percent. Students posted videos showing quick denials that felt predetermined. In May, the Trump administration paused F-1 interviews, saying it was for security reasons.
Strict Checks Slow Down Approvals
When interviews resumed in June, applicants had to disclose social media accounts for background checks. This new step slowed processing times. Indian students continue to report the lack of F-1 slots, forcing many to miss deadlines and defer their plans to next year.
Families Now Reconsider The US Option
The message from Washington is clear and Indian students are facing the impact. Last year’s record numbers now seem like an exception. If the current situation continues, many families may decide the US is no longer worth the risk and look at other countries.
