Indian Students Drop 45% in US, Local Colleges Boom

Indian students are increasingly moving away from US colleges, leading to a rise in admissions at MBA colleges in India. This shift reflects changing priorities among students. Uncertainty and financial concerns are influencing higher education decisions.

According to the Graduate Management Admission Council, Indian enrolments in US management schools fell by about 45 percent year on year in August 2025. This period marks the start of the fall semester. It is one of the sharpest declines among major source countries.

Visa uncertainty under Trump has been cited as a key reason. Temporary pauses on F 1 visa interviews and longer processing timelines created anxiety. The introduction of social media screening also added to student concerns.

The GMAC report further highlighted a rise in post admission drop offs. Many programmes reported that Indian students accepted offers but did not enrol. India emerged as a leading source of such cases.

Financial challenges have also played a role. A weaker rupee and rising tuition costs have made US education more expensive. For many Indian families, studying in America has become harder to afford.

This situation has created an opportunity for Indian institutions. Applications to Indian graduate management programmes increased by around 25 percent. Europe remains an alternative, but domestic options are gaining ground.

Students are now considering shorter and more affordable courses closer to home. In an uncertain US environment, security and stability are becoming priorities. This trend offers Indian private universities and business schools a chance to strengthen their global standing.
