Indian Techie’s Instagram Collab Sparks H-1B Outrage

An Instagram post involving an Indian tech professional has sparked controversy amid ongoing debates around H-1B visa rules in the United States. The issue has gained attention online as discussions around work authorisation and social media activity continue to grow among visa holders.

According to reports shared on X, Indian-American engineer Nikhila Godugu, who works as a Senior Software Engineer at MarkLogic, faced criticism over an alleged paid Instagram collaboration with a boutique. The post quickly went viral and triggered strong reactions from anti-H-1B groups online.

Under H-1B visa regulations, employees are generally permitted to work only for their sponsoring employer. Because of this, earning money through social media promotions or brand collaborations may potentially be viewed as unauthorised work under immigration rules.

The controversy comes during a period of increased scrutiny faced by Indian H-1B professionals in the US. Recent immigration policy changes and stricter monitoring have reportedly increased concerns regarding online activities and public social media content linked to visa holders.

Reports also suggest that US consulates have made social media reviews more important during visa-related processes since December. Some applicants have allegedly faced difficulties during visa stamping or H-1B extension procedures because of content shared on their online accounts.

US immigration attorney Rahul Reddy recently commented on the issue and warned that even harmless online content could create complications if it appears commercial in nature. According to him, videos involving services such as beauty work, cooking, or freelance-style activities may attract additional scrutiny.

The situation has once again highlighted the growing importance of social media behaviour for Indian professionals living in the United States on work visas. Many H-1B holders are now becoming increasingly cautious about the type of content they share publicly online.

Even simple Instagram reels or promotional collaborations could potentially create immigration-related concerns if authorities interpret them as unauthorised work activity. The debate continues to spark strong opinions online as visa holders try to balance personal expression with immigration compliance.
