Vishavpal Singh, a 31-year-old Indian citizen living in Canada, has been arrested in New York on charges of cocaine possession with intent to distribute. The offence carries a minimum prison term of 10 years, a potential life sentence, and fines reaching $10 million.
Cocaine Hidden in Fabric Softener Boxes
Authorities intercepted Singh during a cross-country trucking route. Investigators found 108 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside boxes of fabric softener in his tractor-trailer. U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo called the seizure one of the largest at an international border crossing in the Western District of New York.
Link to Detroit Cocaine Seizure
Federal investigators had tracked Singh across multiple states before his arrest. The case is connected to a July 2025 seizure at the Detroit Ambassador Bridge, where officers confiscated 228 kilograms of cocaine from Pawanjit Gill. Intelligence from that incident helped authorities intercept Singh in New York.
Legal Proceedings and Custody Status
Singh appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer and remains in custody. His detention hearing is scheduled for August 19, where the court will decide whether he can be released before trial. For now, he faces strict federal charges.
Part of Operation Take Back America
The case forms part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide U.S. Department of Justice initiative targeting transnational criminal groups. The programme involves Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood to fight drug trafficking and related violence.
Authorities Stress Wider Crackdown
Officials stressed that Singh’s arrest highlights ongoing efforts to stop large-scale drug trafficking operations. Authorities added that such cases show their commitment to holding offenders accountable and protecting communities from the dangers linked to cocaine distribution.
