Indian Woman Charged for Shoplifting in Airport

A 62-year old Indian origin woman was apprehended at SIngapore’s Changi Airport for stealing items valued at over $1,120 from four different shops in the transit area. The thefts occurred just before her schedules flight, which surprised many, as such incidents are rare at airports.

On December 23, airport staff alerted the police after noticing the woman acting suspiciously. She was seen enteringn and exiting several stores without making any purchases, raising their suspicions. Upon investigation, it was discovered that perfumes and souvenirs were missing from the shops.

A staff member promptly reported the theft to the authorities after confirming that items had been taken. Airport police responded swiftly and arrested the woman before she could board her flight. The stolen goods were found concealed in her hand-carry bag.

Investigations indicated that the woman had visisted four different stores, where she allegedly concealed various items in her bag before leaving without paying. Despite her age, she appeared to know how to evade detection.

The woman, who is an Indian national, will face charges of theft in dwelling and is scheduled appear in court on January 23. If convicted, she could face a prison stentence of up to seven years, along with a fine.

Authorities have stated that they take shoplifting very seriously, particularly in busy locations like airports. They reassured the public that they are collaborating with airport staff and retailers to prevent such incidents in the future.

It’s disheartening to witness incidents like this involving older individuals, as they are often viewed as role models. This situation highlights the importance of awareness among both travelers and retailers to guarantee that such actions are quickly detected and addressed.
