Jimisha Alvani was an Indian tourist visiting the United States who recently went viral after she was caught shoplifting at a Target store in Illinois, Chicago.
The incident unfolded on May 1st, 2025, when Jimisha spent hours inside the shop picking up items worth around $1000, or about Rs 83000, but didn’t pay for them as she hurriedly tried to leave the store.
The recordings from the police’s body cam footage are the ones going viral on social media. After her arrest Jimisha pleaded to the officers, saying she’s willing to pay now.
Following her arrest, Jimisha appeared before the U.S. grand jury on June 26, where she pleaded not guilty to the crime.
There hasn’t been any sentencing yet, but Jimisha might have to pay hefty fines or go to prison for up to 7 years.
Social media users started questioning that if she was going to be brought before the law anyway, was there any need to record her and shame her online?
Some started speculating maybe Jimisha had no clue as to what she was doing, but after looking through the store’s security footage, not many can deny that it was a calculated theft.
Many also believe that this was made into an ethnicity issue owing to the U.S. government’s strict immigration policies, where the authorities are waiting to jump on an opportunity to arrest and deport people who aren’t of the country’s origin.
The internet remains divided on whether to show compassion towards people despite their crime or to punish them severely just because they’re immigrants.
The incident serves as a reminder that it’s important to adhere to the laws of the countries we visit, as you never know which of your actions might be raised against you.
