A few Indians dancing inside Costco, Walmart or shopping malls cannot represent the entire Indian community in the US. But these reels raise a simple question: why turn a shopping space into a stage?
Some defend them by saying, “They are not blocking anyone.” But civic sense goes beyond leaving enough room for people to walk. It also means respecting the purpose of a place and the shoppers who may not want to appear in someone’s video.
“Americans do it too” is no better an excuse. The same respect for shared spaces should apply to everyone.
The frustration is that a few people get their views while their videos become an excuse for trolls to mock an entire community. That generalization is unfair, and so is expecting everyone else to become part of your content.
Dance, have fun and make reels. Just choose an appropriate place.
