One man, 26 years old from India, slipped on rocks near Avalanche Creek while hiking on Saturday morning. He fell into the cold, fast-moving water and was seen briefly resurfacing before being swept away through a narrow gorge around 8:30 am.

Despite search efforts by a helicopter crew and park rangers, his body remains trapped underwater in the gorge due to high water levels from melting snow.

Rangers have reduced search efforts due to dangerous conditions and are monitoring the area. The man was visiting the park from California on vacation with friends.

Later that day, a 28-year-old man from Nepal drowned while swimming with friends in Lake McDonald near Sprague Creek Campground. His friends reported he was not a strong swimmer. He got into trouble about 30 yards from shore around 6:25 pm and went underwater. The lake is shallow near the shore but has a steep drop-off where he submerged.

His body was recovered by the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office dive team in 35 to 40 feet of water. The man was visiting from Portland, Oregon, also on vacation with friends.

Park officials are working with consulates from Nepal and India to notify the families of the victims, whose names have not been released.
