New York Governor Announces Big Indian Holiday!

Globalization has evolved in its meaning over time and how the first wave of it brought the western culture to the developing nations is exactly how the reverse process is taking place in modern times. World has become a more global place where people are accepting and appreciating culture from all around the world. On Wednesday, New York signed a historic legislation making Diwali a public holiday in New York City public schools.

Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul made this announcement through a post on her X account. She shared the glimpses of the Diwali celebration she attended on the occasion of the festival becoming a public holiday. The move has been welcomed by the Indian community who are happy about Diwali getting legal recognition as a holiday.

Governor Kathy Hochul wrote,”As we gathered to celebrate Diwali, I was proud to sign historic legislation making Diwali a New York City public school holiday.” However, not everyone welcomed the move equally. Some Americans opposed it and said there’s no need for an extra holiday.

Earlier this year, Pennsylvania became the first State in the US to make Diwali a public holiday. New York City is following the precedent set by the state.
