One OPT Mistake Ruins US Dream: 2 Masters, No Job

It’s not always smooth sailing once you get to the US on an F-1 student visa. You have to be cautious at every step or else one mistake can cost you your future.

A 24-year-old from Mumbai shared his story on social media about how he lost his OPT (Optional Practical Training) rights in the US due to a CPT filing error. He had studied Chemical Engineering in NYC, hoping for a solid career. Instead, he was sent back to India, jobless and humiliated.

He took the only offer he got: a ₹20,000/month internship in Mumbai with every rupee going into repaying his education loan. He felt like a failure as he became a laughing stock among his friends and family.

Desperate to get out again, he accepted a tuition-free Master’s in Europe, this time in Management, just to gain work rights. But the language barrier hit hard and he returned home once more without a job.

Once again he landed another internship, this time ₹40,000/month but still no full-time offer. Now he’s got two Master’s degrees but is crushed under debt with no escape in sight.

This is the dark side of the NRI dream that one has to face if they are not prepared well. Foreign degrees don’t guarantee success. One mistake abroad and you’re stuck in a loop: broke, and directionless.
