Only VAC Dates Showing for H1B? O1 Might Be Why

Switching from an O1 visa to an H1B should feel like a positive move, but the visa stamping process is leaving many people scratching their heads—even those who have navigated it before.

The DS-160 form is filled out, and the fees are all settled. But when it comes time to book an appointment, the only options popping up are for VACs, not the full consulates.

That’s when the stress really kicks in.

For someone planning a trip to India in September, seeing only the Hyderabad VAC available for July feels off, especially when the original plan was to go to Chennai a few months later.

Now, here’s the big concern: is this just the way things work for O1-to-H1B transitions? Or did something go awry during the scheduling process?

The stamp on the O1 is still good, but switching categories from O1 to H1B typically means a new interview. Plus, Dropbox eligibility often doesn’t apply if the previous visa was in a different category.

So why are only VACs showing up? Is it a technical glitch? Or is the VAC step now a must-do even before the consulate interview slots are available?

There’s also a lack of clarity around rescheduling. If someone books the Hyderabad VAC slot, can they later switch it to a Chennai date if one opens up? The system doesn’t provide answers, and the anxiety just keeps building.

People who have gone through this recently mention that the scheduling tool has changed. It sometimes shows only VAC options first, with consulates appearing later based on eligibility or availability. But for many, that’s not enough to ease their worries.

It’s not about skipping steps; it’s about understanding where the process even starts.

The U.S. visa system continues to be frustratingly unpredictable. And when your travel plans, job, and immigration status hinge on a simple scheduling window, the stakes feel way too high for any trial and error.

When the process feels broken, even if you’re doing everything right, it doesn’t feel secure. That’s the real problem.
