Richest Family in UK; Still Forced into Jail

Just as we were discussing how slavery still persists in different form, another incident of humans being treated as slaves in the UK has surfaced. This time, the culprits are the Hinduja family, a prominent business tycoon family in the country.

The Hinduja family, the biggest business family in the UK, has been accused of using slaves, paying them bare minimum wages, and keeping them in miserable conditions, not allowing them to go outside. A case has been filed against them on charges of human trafficking. Three workers were brought from India and were paid as low as $8 for 18 hours of work per day, which violates Swiss labor laws. The conditions were so dire that the total money spent on their dogs was more than the money spent on these workers.

While the defense lawyers tried to prove that all three workers were given perks and freedom, they couldn’t prove it in court. It seems that the Hinduja family didn’t take the matter seriously, as the elders from the family did not attend the court proceedings, and those who did attend didn’t wait for the verdict.

The family has been convicted of illegal employment and exploitation of workers and has been sentenced to four and a half years. This is not the first time such a case of the rich exploiting the poor in an inhumane way has been heard.
